New Projects for the Next HOPE

We have a ton of space. We're in the middle of New York City in one of the busiest intersections in the world. Those two factors make HOPE pretty accessible and open to all sorts of projects, displays, demonstrations, etc. But it takes time to put it all together which is why we encourage you to start brainstorming now. Save the Hotel!

As we were preparing to launch this forum, we got the disturbing news that plans were in the works to demolish our beloved Hotel Pennsylvania, a move that could spell the end of HOPE. Here we'll discuss ways we can stop this, contingency plans, and all sorts of other methods of keeping HOPE alive. RSS Feed

HOPE Number Six: What Worked (2006)

Tell us what you liked about our last conference. Was there something in particular that seemed to work well and/or that you would like to see at future conferences? HOPE Number Six: What Didn't Work (2006)

You don't need to remind us about the various things that didn't work at HOPE Number Six. But we'd like you to anyway. When organizing something this massive with a volunteer workforce, some problems are inevitable. HOPE Number Six: Reviews of Talks (2006)

This is where you can give an overall review of the various talks and panels that were presented at HOPE Number Six (including the third track). All of the audio for the first and second tracks is available here and you can obtain the DVDs by going here. RSS Feed

The Fifth HOPE (2004)

With The Fifth HOPE, we made better use of all of the space we had access to and expanded our speaking schedule. Held on July 9-11, 2004, we finally found our groove with this one and still managed to not do the same thing each time. RSS Feed

H2K2 (2002)

With H2K2 (the name nobody was expecting), we expanded into some former retail space on the second floor of the Hotel Pennsylvania, making this the hacker conference with the most space ever in the States, held on July 12-14, 2002. RSS Feed

H2K (2000)

H2K was a pivotal HOPE conference which brought us back to the Hotel Pennsylvania from July 14-16, 2000 and started us on a two year alternating schedule with the European hacker conferences. RSS Feed

Beyond HOPE (1997)

We hadn't planned on doing HOPE more than once initially. But after a few years we decided to give it another go and held Beyond HOPE from August 8-10, 1997. This is the only HOPE conference not held at the Hotel Pennsylvania and it was a financial disaster, mostly due to our charging only $20 at the door. The conference itself was a lot of fun from what we've heard and the memories continue to this day. RSS Feed

Hackers On Planet Earth (1994)

The very first HOPE conference was held over two days: August 13 and 14, 1994. It came about when the Summercon organizers asked us if 2600 would like to host their conference that year. Instead we wound up starting something new and it wound up being the first "really big" hacker conference in the United States. RSS Feed

While we all know HOPE is the climax of activities for hackers, the sad fact is that it only comes but once every two years. So how should we keep ourselves occupied until then? You tell us! Ideas for Conference Name

HOPE is different from all those other conferences. We don't just stick a year or a number after our name and congratulate ourselves on being creative. Each HOPE conference has had its own unique name and theme. We believe we can continue this tradition indefinitely. But part of this tradition involves reaching out to the community for inspiration. So what will the next HOPE conference be called? RSS Feed
